The Southern New Hampshire based band Modern Fools brought their unique blend of indie rock and classic americana to Vermont State University’s Lyndon Campus this GreggFest season.
Modern Fools fit right in with the university and festival atmosphere. While introducing the start of their set the lead singer Josh Blair yelled out past the gathered audience calling “All the people smoking weed in the parking lot come on over”. The band opened their set with a lively song “She’s No Saint” from their newest album Clearly Country. While earlier acts had stretched from hard rock to alternative punk and into singer songwriter the classic country song was welcomed by the crowd as it swelled with students and community members dancing along to the swinging song.
Joined on stage by Alex Formento playing the pedal steel, Johnathan Braught on guitar, Justin on drums, and Ian Galipeau on bass with Joslyn adding harmonies and backup vocals to several more original songs off the bands three original albums Clearly Country, Strange Offering, and Seer. In addition to the band’s original songs, they performed a couple covers throughout their set the first being “Luxury Liner” from Gram Parsons’ International Submarine Band’s album Safe at Home. Introducing a new original off the album Clearly Country “We’re going to play a drinking song not that anyone here is drinking” the band jumped into a swinging song titled “Ballroom Bender Blues”
To round out their set the band finished with two more covers “Summertime Moon” by Stella Parton and “Buy Buy Love” by The Everly Brothers. Modern Fools finished out this year’s GreggFest season with their fun stage presence and crowd interactions and perfectly fit the night’s western theme.
