Set It Off returns with a celebration of authenticity and unapologetic artistry, as their sixth studio album captures 16 years of evolution in a sound that is unmistakably their own.
Set It Off shared that their self-titled release is their first independent album, a true monument to the heart of the band. Over the past three years, they have been crafting a record that reflects their struggles, breakthroughs, and ultimate reclamation of their identity. In early 2023, the band announced they were entering a new era, “Dopamine,” and confirmed they had chosen to part ways with Fearless Records. They launched this era with a tour and the release of “Punching Bag,” their first fully independent single.
The album begins with a low pulsing beat with singer Cody Carson jumping into fast paced lyrics with the opening song “Pathological” which released as a single in October 2025. The intensity builds as the song hits the chorus a more intense rock beat jumps in. The song builds with distorted guitars and heavy drums throughout the chorus and breakdown with a toned down instrumental during the high speed verses. “Pathological” sets a tone for the album with its quick tempo and headbanging beat.
Opening with an upbeat, plucky guitar before a heavier full sound kicks in, the second song, “Punching Bag”, has a classic Set It Off beat with distorted guitar and a fun drum pattern. As the first new song on the album, it exemplifies the goals the band brought into creating this new body of work. The lyrics tell the story of an abusive relationship that evolves into one of empowerment, as the victim sheds their identity as a people pleaser and a punching bag. The storytelling is emotional and powerful, set against an intense punk-rock beat.
“Rotten”, released as a single in June 2025, leans into the idea of fake sugary sweetness and the dark side of manipulation and attachment. “Switch”, explores a relationship between the singer and another person using the moniker “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” to describe the effect the two sides of the relationship have on each other. The lyrics highlight the speed at which situations can go from wonderful to horrible in these types of relationships, like a switch flipping.
“Fake Ass Friends” is another single, released in March 2024, is a song focused on calling out the brazen ways people change to reach their goals, pushing anyone down in the process. “What’s In It For Me?”, is a new song that branches away from the high-energy tracks on the album. While far from a ballad, it brings strong vocals and heavy lyrics, offering commentary on how people will take and take while giving nothing back.
One of the most anticipated songs, “Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing [REBORN]”, a new, reimagined version of one of Set It Off’s most popular tracks. The independent recording of the song was released a year ago on November 1. In the post announcing the REBORN project, the caption read, “OUR VERSION, ON OUR TERMS, FOR YOU,” referencing the band’s previous label, Equal Vision, and its ownership of the original recording. The reimagined version fits the heavier tone of the album with more distortion and several lyric and stylistic changes to match the band’s new direction in the Dopamine era.
Song 9, “Vicious Cycle”, continues the themes of toxic relationships with aggressive lyrics and a heavy beat. Songs 10 and 11 are also previously released singles: Creating Monsters is a less heavy track with an upbeat tempo and playful lyrics that call back to the band’s earlier projects, while Parasite takes a sharp turn with a heavy opening beat and dramatic lyrics.
The final track, “Worst Case Scenarios”, closes the album with a heartfelt song featuring emotional lyrics exploring themes of inadequacy and calling out for help. With lines like “Why, what more can I do to fix these future wounds?” and “Someone save me now, just save me now, this man behind the curtain won’t let me out,” the song feels like a letter begging for someone to listen.
As the band’s first independent work, the album represents their individual artistry and the goals they set for themselves. Although their sound has shifted to a heavier tone compared to their previous work with Equal Vision and Fearless Records, longtime fans continue to embrace and rock out to the band’s new direction.
